Day of the Dead Race

¿Que los motivó s ustedes empezar el Day of the Dead Race?

When did this event start?
Chela Sanchez, who has been co-organizing the annual Day of the Dead Race, along with Alfredo Flores since 2014 said “it was the realization of a dream.”
“Having grown up in this community, we had talked about holding a community event for years. We wanted to create an event that would serve as a bridge to educate, engage the community, and showcase Latino culture.”
Having had the opportunity to see other communities celebrated Dia de los Muertos, I talked to Alfredo and knew that this was something we could do.
Through our partnerships with the City of Talent, Talent Maker City, Talent Public Arts Committee, and our incredible sponsors we have been able to grow our race and festival to a full-day event. Last year we were able to expand our activities to include a night walk, which has expanded its footprint from last year. The Day of the Dead Race starts at 10 AM Nov. 2nd at Talent City Hall. Participants have the opportunity to have their face painted with traditional Calaveras designs.

Your background(s): How long you’ve lived in Talent, what brought you here, from where, etc.?
Our parents emigrated here from Mexico in the early ‘80s. My siblings and I were all born here and went to school here. Throughout our childhoods, we saw our parents struggle to assimilate as they tried to make a life in the Rogue Valley. It is through their teachings that we developed a love for our history and our culture.
What motivated you to start the Day of the Dead Race?
Our philosophy is to improve our community by creating bridge events that push past social barriers and stereotypes, and help us all move forward together through mutual respect, appreciation and understanding.

Describe Día de Los Muertos
Día de los Muertos is a holiday celebrated throughout Mexico that is born of Mesoamerican tradition. For centuries, this holiday based on All Souls Day, commemorates the deceased by building altars and ofrendas (offerings) with favorite items and significant possessions of those loved ones now passed. Despite the name, the holiday is not one that focuses on death but rather celebration of the lives of loved ones that have passed.
