LOLA, THE QUARTERBACK

During every autumn season we can expect the same changes; the trees of green give change to the fall yellows and reds while our dear hills and valleys gradually get cooler and colder every day. Autumn is also the season for sports and the little ones run out the door to play all sports involving inflatable bladders from soccer, volleyball and don’t forget about our dear friend football! The game where the youth pile drive each other into the grass! That said, football is a sport for those who can sustain the pain! Ya’ll need to understand that football is a sport for boys and men!

Hold up! Is it true that football is only for the good old boys? We all need to understand that it is women who have a higher pain tolerance than men. With that said, we need to support our young women to participate in any sport they want, no matter how physical or rough it may appear.

The City of Talent: a little town with a big star

Talent is a small sleeper community situated between Ashland and next year. Many of the people who habituate t-town are hard working folk who are dedicated to waking up each morning and putting on their work clothes one extremity at a time. So this is where we’ll find Talent Middle School, a school of 600 or more students and a place where it’s easy to get lost in the crowd.

Yet it is here where we’ll find one of the brightest stars amongst the galaxies of youth, a supernova named Lola Lumberas who just may be the brightest talent of them all.

Currently an 8th grader, Lola is already well known in her generation, both by students and teachers, as being the best athlete at the school. She is such a standout sportsgirl, that she had no less set her sights on playing quarterback on the football team, ya know, the most prestigious position in sports.

It’s common knowledge that the schools best athlete plays the quarterback position, most at Talent Middle School wouldn’t think it’s strange to see Lola taking snaps. The rumor on the streets is that Lola can handle her own against anybody, and those who know gleefully offer their support. Legend has it that in PE class, Lola dominates her classmates and earned her respect through hard work and sweat.

A Family of Athletes

The Lumberas family moved from Mexico to Southern Oregon to seek work and establish a new life. They landed in the Klamath Falls basin and that is where Marco Lumbreras developed into the areas best athlete. So much so that his friends encouraged him to try out for the football team. It turned out to be a furtunous decision as he earned awards and accolades for his on field prowess.

Soon after graduating, Marco moved his family to the Rogue Valley and choose to live in Talent where they had an opportunity to work and contribute to their communities. Talent, a chill and kickback place, is where Marco started not only his successful business but also his growing family. Lola arrived as a set of twins and was quickly accompanying her father to sporting events. It was because of this early exposure to athletics that Marco had a sneaking suspicion early on that his daughter would be a tremendous athlete.

An Athlete develops Confidence

Without much discussion, it safe to say that Lola can be singled out as one of the best athletes at Talent Middle School, gender aside. However, all athletes develop insecurities about their abilities. They might think that they are not strong enough to complete a pass or fast enough to avoid a tackler. Lola was no stranger to this dark time but her road to recovery proved fruitful as she turned to improving herself instead of blaming herself. By turning to Youtube tutorials in football, Lola learned how to improve her throwing motion while at the same time helping build her confidence. With a new work ethic and confidence, she decided to try out for the quarterback position this year.

The Talent Middle School coach had heard rumblings of a tremendous athlete and it turned out that stories of Lola had made it to him. With the coach’s encouragement, she tried out for the football team and on the first day of practice was tackled to the ground. To his surprise, she quickly got back up and ran back to the huddle. His eyes jolted out of their sockets as he witnessed her complete passes, avoid tacklers and do just about anything on the field. Suddenly he had a tough decision to make, “how would I tell the team and school that our starting quarterback would be a girl?”. Well, he pondered, there is never a good time for any kind of news, so he called the team over for a huddle and made the announcement. He blurted out, “your new starting quarterback will be Lola!”. Upon hearing the news, Lola was a bit confused, not made any easier by the cheers from the other players.

It’s November now and the season is over. The Talent Middle School team won some games and lost some games. Mostly, they impressed their community and made history.  However, the story that will continue will be that Lola became the first girl to lead the Talent Middle School football team and most importantly will now be a wonderful example for younger athletes that they may also pursue their dreams and passions!
