DíA DE LOS MUERTOS / DAY OF THE DEAD

Los muertos viven tras cuentos. Los cuentos traen vida a los que han pasado por este mundo y que dejaron su leyenda personal para que los podamos recordar en la manera que decidamos. Hay recuerdos con emociones que nos pueden traer lágrimas de tristeza o risa. Cada persona puede revivir y recordar a sus muertos tras la memoria. En el Día de los Muertos festejamos la vida que vivieron los muertos. Festejamos para recordar a los muertos de la manera que podamos sentir que los tenemos juntos. El Día de los Muertos, como otras celebraciones únicas, se está celebrando con más frecuencia en los Estados Unidos. Sabemos que cuando las tradiciones emigran a veces perdemos parte de ellas, pues bien, en este artículo nos enfocaremos en la originalidad de un altar.

Con un altar recordamos a los muertos y se puede construir en la tumba o en la sala de su propia casa. El altar tiene una estructura y detalles particulares y es la forma más importante en que celebramos el Día de los Muertos. Los niveles o escalones de un altar tienen su significado que representan los pasos que deben recorrer el alma de el muerto para poder descansar. Laura Quintero prepara su altar es una tradición que ha seguido desde niña, “Esta tradición me gusta porque es mestiza con la adaptación con la parte católica y la parte prehispánica.” Pueden ver tres o siete niveles de un altar que representan el cielo, la tierra y el inframundo. Estos son los elementos necesarios de un altar de tres niveles.

1. Imagen del difunto, que se coloca en la parte más alta del altar;

2. Una cruz, que va al lado de la imagen del difunto, puede ser de sal o ceniza;

3. Una imagen de ánimas del purgatorio, sirve para que en caso de que el espíritu del muerto se encuentre en dicha instancia, salga más rápido;

4. Copal o incienso, que sirve para purificar y limpiar;

5. Arco, se coloca en la cúspide del altar y simboliza la entrada al mundo de los muertos;

6. Papel picado, representa la alegría del Día de Muertos;

7. Velas, veladoras y cirios: representan la luz que guía;

8. Agua: es de mucha importancia porque refleja la pureza del alma, además sirve para que los espíritus mitiguen su sed. También se puede colocar un jabón o toalla a un costado, para que los difuntos se pueda asear;

9. Flores  de cempasúchil: sirven de guía a los espíritus en este mundo;

10. Calaveras: sirve para recordar que la muerte siempre está entre nosotros;

11. Comida: se pone para que el alma que nos visita disfrute los platillos que le gustaron en vida;

12. Pan de Muerto: su forma circular representa el ciclo de la vida y la muerte;

13. Objetos personales: se colocan para que los difuntos recuerden sus momentos en vida.

Cuando nuestra cultura festeja el Día de los Muertos, no mira la muerte como que hay una ausencia o una falta. A lo contrario, es como una nueva etapa para el muerto por que viene a caminar y a observar el altar preparado por medio de sus seres queridos. Los muertos miran, huelen, prueban y escuchan. Los muertos no son seres ajenos, sino una presencia que viven años tras años y nos alegran con su visita. En este día celebramos la vida y lo que significaron para nosotros. ¡Feliz día De Los Muertos!

The dead live through stories. Stories bring life to those who have passed through this world and left their personal legend so that we can remember them in a meaningful way. There are emotional memories of our loved ones that can bring us tears of sadness or laughter. Each person can relive and remember their loved ones who have passed through the memories of them. On the Day of the Dead we celebrate the life that the dead once lived. We celebrate with remembering the dead in the way where we can feel we that they are with us. Day of the dead, like other unique celebrations, is emerging into the United States. When traditions migrate, sometimes we lose part of our tradition, as in this article, we will focus on the uniqueness of an altar.

An altar can be built on a tombstone or in your own home to remember the dead. The altar has a structure with particular details and is the most important way in which we celebrate the Day of the Dead. The levels or steps of an altar have their specific meaning that represent the steps that a soul must travel so it can rest. Laura Quintero has traditionally prepared her altar since she was a child, “This tradition I like because it is mestizo with the adaptation of the Catholicism part and the pre-Hispanic part.” You can see three or seven levels  of an altar that represent the sky, the earth and the underworld. These are the necessary elements of a three-level altar:

1. An Image of the deceased, which is placed on the highest part of the altar;

2. A cross, that goes next to the image of the deceased, can also be of salt or ash;

3. An image of souls of purgatory, it serves so that in case the spirit of the dead person is in that instance, it leaves faster;

4. Copal or incense, used to purify and cleanse;

5. An arch, it is placed on the cusp of the altar and symbolizes the entrance to the world of the dead;

6. Paper banner represents the joy of the Day of the Dead;

7. Candles, candles and candles: they represent the light that guides;

8. Water: it is very important because it reflects the purity of the soul; it also serves for the spirits to mitigate their thirst. You can also place a soap or towel on one side, so that the deceased can clean up;

9. Cempasúchil (marigolds) flowers: they serve as a guide to the spirits in this world;

10. Calaveras/Skulls: serves to remember that death is always among us;

11. Food: it is put so that the soul that visits us enjoys the dishes that they loved in life;

12. Pan de Muerto/Bread: its circular shape represents the cycle of life and death;

13. Personal objects: placed so that the deceased remember their moments in life.

When our culture celebrates the Day of the Dead, it does not look at death, as there is an absence or a lacking something. On the contrary, it is like a new stage for the dead because they come to walk and observe the altar prepared by their loved ones. According to tradition, the dead look, smell, taste and listen. The dead are not strangers, but a presence that live years after years and make us happy with their visit during this time. On this day we celebrate life and what our loved ones who have passed mean to us.
