Donde los poemas nacen/Where poems are born

Cuando los integrantes de OSF, UNIVERSES Mildred Ruiz-Sapp, Steven Sapp y William Ruiz, también conocido como Ninja, comenzaron a entrevistar a miembros de los Black Panthers y los Young Lords, para la obra musical Party People en el 2012, ellos sabían que parte de su tarea sería proteger el legado de las personas que a menudo están mal representadas y cuyas historias son representadas en el escenario.  También, sintieron la misma responsabilidad hacia August Wilson, el dramaturgo cuya poesía inspiró su musical de estreno mundial, UniSon.

“Al principio fue muy difícil,” comenta Mildred acerca de la presión que sintieron al trabajar con poemas de uno de los dramaturgos más queridos del mundo. “Y luego fue como, tu sabes, hablemos de donde somos. Entonces digamos que me morí. ¿Cuál es mi legado? ¿Qué es lo que estoy dejando atrás? Y como artistas individuales en nuestro propio derecho, somos capaces de contribuir a la conversación y darle a la poesía de August un lugar dentro de una generación diferente.

Si bien este nuevo musical está inspirado en algunos de los poemas de Wilson, en su núcleo es una creación nueva de tres poetas/compositores/dramaturgos/intérpretes de UNIVERSES, en asociación con Constanza Romero, la viuda de Wilson.

“UNIVERSES es un grupo fuerte, siempre me voy conmovida e inspirada por su trabajo, y UniSon no es la excepción,” comenta Carolina Castañeda del Rio miembro de la comunidad local. “Para los que nos preguntamos de donde nacen los poemas, UniSon nos ofrece una probadita dentro del alma del poeta August Wilson, una bella historia de la sublimación de sus (y de todos) terrores más profundos.

Romero, quien asistió a algunos de los ensayos de la obra, estaba sorprendida de como el conjunto ha llevado la poesía de su difunto esposo a “un nuevo mundo de danza, música, actuación, palabra hablada y teatralidad mística….” Debo decir que, si August estuviera aquí conmigo en OSF, diría que está orgulloso de haber inspirado a estos artistas para llegar a esta nueva obra, UniSon.

When OSF ensemble-in-residence UNIVERSES—Mildred Ruiz-Sapp, Steven Sapp and William Ruiz, a.k.a. Ninja—began interviewing members of the Black Panthers and Young Lords for their 2012 musical Party People, they knew part of their task would be to protect the legacy of the often-misrepresented people whose stories they were bringing to the stage, and they felt the same responsibility toward August Wilson, the playwright whose poetry has inspired their world-premiere musical, UniSon.

“At first it was really difficult,” Mildred says of the pressure they felt working with the poems of one of the world’s most beloved playwrights. “And then it was like, you know, let’s just talk from where we are. So let’s say that I passed away. What’s my legacy? What is the thing that I’m leaving behind? And as individual artists in our own right, we are able to contribute to that conversation and give August’s poetry a place within a different generation.”

While this new musical is inspired by and features some of Wilson’s poetry, at its core it’s a new creation by the three poets/songwriters/playwrights/performers of UNIVERSES, in association with Constanza Romero, Wilson’s widow.

“UNIVERSES is such a powerful group, I always leave moved and inspired by their work, and UniSon is not the exception,” says local community member Carolina Castañeda del Río. “For those of us who wonder where poems are born, UniSon offers us a peek into the soul of poet August Wilson, a beautiful story of the sublimation of his (and everyone’s) deepest terrors.”

Romero, who attended some of the play’s rehearsals, was struck by how the ensemble has brought her late husband’s poetry into “a new world of dance, music, performance, spoken word and mystical theatricality…. I must say that if August were here with me at OSF, he would say he was proud to have inspired these artists to arrive at this brand new work, UniSon.”
