The Medford Police Department’s motto is “Your Police – Our Community”. We stand by that and take pride in the service we provide to all members of our community. We want to ensure that the Latino community is receiving good service, and we look for ways to improve our ability to do so with this segment of our city. You are important to us, We want you to know that. We want you to know that.
Medford’s Latino population has been most recently measured at 14%. Taking into consideration that this may be under-reported, this is a substantial group of people that we serve. The growth of the Latino population in Medford from 2000 to 2010 increased by 76%! These numbers are expected to continue to grow, and that adds to our need to build more relationships with the Latino Community. Talk to us, and help us grow this relationship.
The Medford Police Department has made the commitment to hire police officers that are fluent Spanish speakers. We would also look to hire more qualified Latino officers as well. We will not lower the standard, but we are convinced that we can find these candidates. We need your help here too.
The Latino Community can help us in this recruitment effort. Please refer potential candidates to us for future consideration. The best method of recruitment for new police officers is by individual referral. You know who you would trust – and who you think would make a good police officer for your community. Let us know who those folks are.
Currently the Medford Police Department has thirteen (13) employees, both Officers and civilians, that have fluent Spanish language skill. In order for all of us at the Medford Police Department to serve the Latino population in the best possible way – trust needs to occur. You have to trust that we are not immigration – and that no one’s status is a risk by talking to us. We are prohibited by Oregon law from enforcing immigration law. We need to ensure we have your trust – and that you will talk with us. We want you to report your neighborhood problems to us. If you are a victim, we want you to report the crime to us. The only way we both can be fully successful in our city is if we communicate with each other.
This really is “Your Police – Our Community”. This motto is printed on every patrol car we deploy. We want to improve our relationship with the Latino community – one person – one case at a time. I am convinced that the Latino community here in Medford wants the same things that the other segments of our population wants: safe neighborhoods, safe schools, and safe parks & recreation areas. With your help and trust in us, we can work together to achieve these “wants.”
